Grampa told us about taking the boats out at four in the morning to fill the nets with enough to take down to the wholesale abalone auctions when he was a boy. Little did we know that everything we had was due to mom and dad's keeping up with selling to the wholesale abalone dealers during hard times when it was difficult to maintain even a half a ton average every six months or so.
The boats were the first thing to go. Wholesale abalone sales were still lucrative, but competition and depleted populations made it uneconomical to maintain a four boat fleet anymore. Gramma would keep tabs on world markets of wholesale abalone so that we could fetch the best prices for our now reduced catches. It can't last like this though. All the people who became wealthy through wholesale abalone trading need to do something to give back to that which gave them their success and start helping support developing new ways to preserve and increase the populations of the few abalone that still remain. Now we just dive for sea urchins for fun, bodysurfing for a thrill.
