Red Abalone

Paul always said Red Abalone were bad luck, but how can a giant snail be bad luck? Never really noticed any difference. Paul just always seemed to have bad luck anyway, whether he was poaching Red Abalone, green, or pintos. Everybody would just ignore him when he started talking that way, but it still would creep us out sometimes.

One time he got a rush order from some fancy restaurant in San Francisco for two or three hundred pounds of Red Abalone. He made us help him with the promise that he would make it worth our while, of course never shutting up about the bad luck stigma of the Red Abalone, but we didn't pay attention, our eyes were on the green. Weather was horrendous that week, but there was no time, so we had to get out there quick. Early Saturday morning Paul and Rufus went over the side, coming up a few times each in the next half an hour with bags and bags of Red Abalone. Paul scraped his ankle real bad on an old hunk of metal and kept blabbing about bad luck and curses. Rufus looked scared as he watched the blood trail down behind Paul as he went for another batch. Ten seconds later he was back at the surface with terror in his eyes and the water was thrashing wildly and was stained a deep crimson against the dawn sky. Rufus was screaming something about Paul and great whites but he was jerked underneath too quick and the water around him stained dark with red. Thankfully the bags with the abalone inside were fitted with inflated tubes to offset the weight, and they eventually floated to the surface. The catch that day was worth well over five grand. Only bad luck for some.
