Abalone Shell

Every day she wore abalone shell. Even if you couldn't see it, you could be sure it was there. She had ways of slipping some form of abalone shell into her ensemble so that you might never even notice. An abalone belly button ring, a small polished piece in a decorative bobby pin, she even had tiny fragments sewn into a few pairs of socks.

No one really knew why or how her obsession with abalone shell began. Some people say that as a girl she was in love with a local boy who dove for abalone in the nearby coves to provide for his mother and younger siblings. He was a phenomenon in the village, known for being completely fearless, going where older and more experienced divers feared to descend. He would often bring her the most beautiful polished shards and elaborate shapes of abalone shell as tokens of his undying affection for her. One day he dove in and never came back up, a calm day when the sea was like glass. She sat on the cliff for three days clutching a necklace of abalone shell he had made for her, gazing out at the sea and waiting for his return. Finally her family convinced her to give up her vigil and come home. They say she wears the shell to remind her, and to show him that she never forgot, if ever one day he should return from the depths of the sea.
