There is a saying in our town. If you don't wear abalone jewelry, you're up to some tomfoolery. Don't ask where it came from. Dad says it's because the one thing that's never run out around here is abalone shell, and abalone jewelry is one of the main things that has kept a lot of families from going hungry or losing their homes during some of the leaner times in past years. It's a sort of attempt at a creative way to gently remind folks to support the local economy.
Needless to say, abalone jewelry is much more common here than turquoise, jade, gold or diamonds. Most people prefer the way that silver goes with the shimmering colors in the shell, so the abalone jewelry made here is mostly made with silver. Lately people have gotten more creative and more technologically sophisticated around here, so now there's even a little more money coming into the local economy through Internet sales of abalone jewelry that some of the town's little shops and native artisans have gotten hip to.
